Aluminium chloride (AlCl3) is the main compound of aluminium and chlorine. It is colourless-to-white powder. turns grey-to-yellow on exposure to moisture. Aluminium chloride (AlCl3) is often contaminated with iron trichloride, So it is normal giving it a yellow colour. Aluminium Chloride solid has a low melting and boiling point.

Aluminium chloride is hygroscopic, having a very pronounced affinity for water. It fumes in moist air and hisses when mixed with liquid water as the Cl− ions are displaced with H2O molecules in the lattice to form the hexahydrate AlCl3·6H2O (also white to yellowish in color).
